I don’t do cover songs. But at the Funhouse one time, Stanhope said “You should cover this song by Little Feat. Shit band, great song.” I listened to it and it was a little too cocaine soft-rock/ California hippie/ 70’s positive vibes for me. I tried to gut it like a dead horse and climb inside it like DiCaprio in Revenant. I feel like I did okay. Stanhope gave me shit for changing it to “head kicked in” instead of “head stove in” but that’s fine. He got to use ‘stove’ as a verb in his last book and hard K sounds are vastly superior and if Stanhope knew the first thing about k-k-komedy he would know that. The ‘aw, come on, man’ before the solo is me reacting to him refusing to RT my tour dates. I like that the ending is defiant, even hopeful.

My buddies Jon Bartel and Chase Crawford—two friends I made out on the road—did a great job on fiddle and lead guitar, respectively. This recording will always feel like a minor miracle to me not just because most of the people in the band have never met, but because I got the woman I’m mourning in the first verse to sing with me on the choruses. Forgiveness is some powerful magic. I wasn’t there when she tracked it but the first time I heard it back with her voice on the chorus… man, it felt like Tom Sawyer walking in to church at his own funeral. Jarring as it was to hear the voice of The Big Ex on that song, after repeated listens, now it sounds like the voice of a friend I will have for the rest of my life, a friend I’ve had for a long time now.
